Starting to apply the final coats of paper.
The white paper we use here is commonly known in England as' linning paper'. Here in France the nearest I can get to it is 'children's drawing roll' from Ikea. The idea in finishing with this paper is to create a final strong and robust surface. For larger pieces it's ideal, and you can apply as many layers as you want.
We applied two coats on all the windows. Once these were dry we sanded the Windows by hand and with an electric sander. This need only take a few minutes just to get rid of a few of the unwanted 'lumps and bumps'.
The Windows are very imposing here, set out on the steps of the village square to dry off for an hour in the afternoon sun. Quite a few local people had already heard about the 'community project' and it's theme but now, those passing, could get a taste of what was really going on.
Evelyn, Laurence, Isabelle and Nalalie.
The original date for the project was eight weeks and a total of sixteen hours. Here we are week eight and only half way through. I am much to blame for the way the project is becoming much bigger and more complicated than originally planned. But we are having great fun as a group and all seem happy enough to continue for another six to eight weeks to see it through.
Laurence's Window receives the final coats of Paper Mache. She has used the pattern of bricks that you often find over windows and door ways to great effect. Here she replaces bricks with books to maintain her theme of 'the writer' who inhabits her house.
